A weekend in Lena, IL with International students
On Friday night and Saturday, friends and I brought a group of International students - Chinese scholars - to visit our church friends in Lena, IL. It was a lot of fun. We have 12 students in totals. These folks are from mainland China and in the US for 6 months up to 2 years. It is most common that they have left behind family such as a husband and a child. It is a long time and really hard. The US government will not usually let them bring their families as they are afraid that they will choose to stay in the US if their family is with them.
On Friday night, we had a potluck dinner with our host families. It was great. And that was followed by a tour of the church. For many of the Chinese, they may never have been in a Church before. So it is a learning experience and opportunity for them to learn about Christianity.
And then it was home with the host families. The next morning was spent with host families doing various activities. I stayed with a Chinese couple and a host family. In the morning, we went to see their son's hog farm. He had just gotten in 1500 piglets to raise for 6 weeks. What a smell!!!!
And then it was off to ride the horses. The students loved it. We finished off in the afternoon by going to a dairy farm. When in the calf barn, I tried to encourage the Chinese to let the calves suck on their fingers. It is a wierd, slimmy sensation. It was great fun to get the look in their faces.
On the way home in my car, the Chinese were singing songs in Chinese. Really quiet beautiful. The leader of the group said that this was the frist time that she had heard them sing like this. They were very happy.
